Termly Learning Focus
We hope you have all had a restful summer and are ready to start Year 2! We cannot wait to welcome you back into school and begin all of the exciting activities we have planned for the Autumn term.
Here is an outline of what your child is learning about in their first half term in Year 2:
We will be learning many new things: In English, we will be delving into the story ‘Little Red Reading Hood’ by Lucy Rowland. Just like the fairy-tale, Little Red meets a wolf but this time in the library. Will be friendly or not? The children will develop their writing skills to be able to retell exactly what happened. In Maths, we will developing our understanding of numbers within 100 and begin to add and subtract. In Science, we will be learning about different plants and animals and investigating their habitats. After exploring different habitats, we will use this understanding to be able to create a suitable habitat for a variety of mini-beasts.
Across the rest of the curriculum, we are growing our learning in:

(Please explore these words with your child– the more they hear them, the more they stick!)
How can you help your child at home? Next term, we will be designing and making our own wind powered cars by using recycled materials. It would be great if children could explore toy cars at home including; how these are able to move, change direction and stop.
Daily reading at home remains an important part of your child’s learning and is essential if your child is to progress across the curriculum. Your child will bring home two reading books; A Read Write Inc. book and a sharing book. Your child should use their Read Write Inc. book to practise their reading at least 3 times a week. The additional book is a sharing book which is for you to enjoy reading with your child. Reading journals must be in school every day so we can celebrate their practising at home, as well as for adults in school to record in.
Every Wednesday afternoon, your child will visit the library so they have the opportunity to return their library book and select a new one to enjoy and share with you. Please ensure your child brings their library book back to school on a Wednesday so they are able to return it and borrow a new book for the week ahead.
