Spelling

From Year 2 onwards, Spelling is taught once a week, as part of our English curriculum, following the Spelling Shed Scheme of Work. This scheme builds on and supports phonics teaching. Spelling Shed's approach to spelling involves the relationship between sounds and written symbols as well as using morphology to help spell through meaning.

Spelling at Home

Children in Year 1-Year 6 have access to the Spelling Shed games from home. These are stuck inside reading journals. Our expectation is for children to access this three times a week at home Every Friday, during achievement assembly, the class with the highest number of points over the week receive a class reward.

Spelling Shed is a great game – it is AI generated, so the more you play, the more it focuses your learning to help you to progress. You can find it at www.play.edshed.com , or you can download the app (paid

Statutory Spelling Lists

The children are taught the words from the statutory list from the National Curriculum. These are called orange words in RWI Spelling. The word-lists for years 3 and 4 and years 5 and 6 are a mixture of words pupils frequently use in their writing and those which they often misspell. Some of the listed words may be thought of as quite challenging, but the 100 words in each list can easily be taught within the four years of key stage 2 alongside other words that teachers consider appropriate.
